2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Lead to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined direction.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

The news echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete message from the president's communication:

Team—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a more distinct identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our fans.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To further the incredible development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.

His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to keep witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, risks, and tests that evolve every round. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and hope your team can secure victory? The option is yours."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as development progresses.
