In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
