A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
