Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
