Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
